Reindeer

Santa's reindeer are getting ready for their annual trip around the world for Christmas. But unlike Santa's reindeer the ones you find in zoos or in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Russia, Mongolia, northern China or North America Canada, Sakhalin, Greenland, Spain Siberia, and Greenland they can't fly. These reindeer have very dense fur to keep warm. They also live in large herds to protect them selves from predators including wolves and cougars. African Elephant

African Elephants are the largest land animal on earth. They are slightly larger than there African cousins. A elephant's ears help to keep the animal cool in hot weather by flapping there ears back and forth. Also African elephants enjoy water they suck up water and spray it on themselves or each other. They can also use there trunks as a snorkel when they go into deeper water. They often spray them selves with a protective coating of dust. The trunk contains over 100,000 mussels! Both male and female have tusks males will use them to fight for a female and the females will use them for protection of there young. they also may use the tusks to dig for food and water and strip bark from trees. Because ivory is so valuable to some humans, many elephants have been killed for their tusks. This trade is illegal today, but it has not been completely eliminated, and some African elephant populations remain endangered. Elephants eat roots, grasses, fruit, and bark, and they eat a lot of these things. An adult elephant can consume up to 300 pounds of food per day. These large animals do not sleep much they have to keep eating to sustain their massive bodies. Female elephants (cows) live in family herds with their young, but adult males (bulls) tend to roam on their own. Having a baby elephant is a serious commitment. Elephants have a longer pregnancy than any other mammal almost 22 months! At birth, elephants already weigh some 200 pounds and stand 3ft tall. African elephants, unlike their Asian relatives, are not easily domesticated. But can be trained and are mainly kept in zoos. Very few zoos have African elephants because its quite hard to capture them out from the wild unless they are injured or born in captivity.

Emperor penguins

Emperor penguins are the largest know species of penguin standing 4ft tall. During breeding season a penguin will sing to find its mate. Then the female will pass the egg to the male. Then the female will leave for about month and go fishing. While the females are gone the males huddle together to stay warm and as a male gets warm it moves tord the perimeter so another can enjoy the warmth. When the females come home they find there mates and new born chicks. The females will regurgitate food to feed the chicks. The chicks have gray feathers witch will shed as they grow then will turn into a black, white, and yellow coat. Once the chicks have fully grown they take there first swim and learn to catch fish. They live a life span of 15-20 years and live in large groups. There predators are Leopard seals and humans they are not mammals but came from the bird family. Dolphins

Dolphins are very intelligent creatures marine biologists think they could be smarter than primates! they can learn tricks very easily, and communicate using a variety of clicks and whistles. Dolphins are mammals but do live in water they come up to breath through a blowhole on the top of its head. Also dolphins can not sleep or else they would drown. So they let half of there brain fall asleep and sleep about 8 hours a day. Dolphins can sleep 3 different ways swimming very slowly and coming up to breath now and again. Resting at the surface with there blowhole exposed, or resting on the bottom of shallow waters and coming up to breath every once in a while. There are 32 species of oceanic dolphins and about 5 river species. An average bottlenose dolphin can live between 40-50 years. Most dolphins can dive up to 300 meters (990 ft) and stay under for around 2 minutes but can be trained to stay under for 7 min. Dolphins can grow to around 3ft long and eat 50 lb of food per day. Most dolphins travel in groups called pods were up to 1,000 dolphins can live together. A dolphins skin sheds constantly so algae can't grow on it.

Great White sharks

Great white sharks are the largest predatory shark they can reach an average length of around 20ft and a weight of 1,500 to 2,450 lb. They mainly eat seals but sometimes do attack on humans but your more likely to get hit by a falling coconut than get attacked by a shark. In the case of being attacked by a great white shark it's about mistaken identity. If your a surfer and swimming out to the waves from underneath you look like a seal to the shark so then it come up from underneath it a natural attack. When a shark attacks it comes out of the water in a breach. When a shark comes out of the water it protects its eyes with a nontransparent lens. Grizzly Bears

Grizzlies are the Second largest breed of bear. The grizzly bear is not actually on the endangered species list. With the exception of the Yellowstone Park population of grizzlies, the bear was removed from the threatened list March 22, 2007. Yellowstone is the main range of grizzly bears. They do live in Alaska, Canada, North West United States, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming. Male grizzlies can reach weights of 454.5 kilograms and a height of 8ft on there hind legs. Females are on average 38% smaller than the males. A female will protect here cubs with her life and a male can kill a cub to mate with a female even if the cubs are his own. Although grizzlies are in the family of Carnivora and have the digestive system of a carnivore, they are actually omnivores since their diet consists of both plants and animals. Grizzlies are know to kill and eat moose, deer, sheep, elk, bison, caribou and even black bears. But they also eat berry's, and small bugs that are hiding under logs. Tigers

There is only one species of tiger, Panthera tigris, but there are six living subspecies: Bengal Tiger, Indo-Chinese Tiger, Malayan Tiger, Siberian or Amur Tiger, South China Tiger, and Sumatran Tiger. Each tiger has a different stripe pattern so no two tigers are the same. Tigers mainly hunt at night and eat monkeys, young elephants, rhinoceroses, deer, cattle, and wild pigs. White tigers are very "rare" or "endangered" they are not a breed of tiger they are called "albino" this means that when born the cells have trouble and are unable to create pigment of color.

capuchin monkeys

Monkey's are the the closest animal to humans they are very smart too. The most famous monkey is the capuchin monkey. They can be kept as pets or even trained to help disabled people. They are also very caring to one another they like to share with family members but are very exclusive to strangers. There are 8 species of these monkeys they belong to the primate family that are closely related to humans.These monkeys have long tails that are called prehensile tail that acts like a third arm and can be used to hold food or hang upside down to climb trees. Baby Capuchins are very small and are able to fit in your hand a adult is able to sit on you shoulder. In the wild they live in groups from 10-12 ran by a dominant male but females will sometimes mate with other males in the group. These monkeys live for about 35-45 years. Horses

Horses have been around for thousands of years there are over 300 breeds of horses.The smallest is the fellabella and largest Belgian.The first breed of horse lived around the ice age, and was about the size of a rabbit with split hooves.A female horse is called a mare and a male is called a stallion. Horses come in many colors from black to White the most popular colors are chestnut, White, and Black. Horses can gallop up to 60 mph at full speed. A baby horse is called a foal and are born with a curly main and tail and learn to walk within 3 min. In the wild, horses live in herds that is ran by a dominant male that has to protect up to 8 mares sometimes more. Younger stallions are stronger than some older stallions so they will fight by rearing up to win over the herd. Horses can also be tamed and kept as a pet they are used for riding in competition, and large draft horses are used to pull sleds on Christmas, or pulling carts for farming. Horses are a lot of work they have to be fed 3 times a day, ridden or exercised 2 times a day, Groomed 1 time a day, and there stall has to be cleaned once a day.

Wolves

Wolves live in a group called a pack and just 3 wolves can take down a full grown elk, bison, or even a moose. The packs are lead bye a dominant male and female they sent mark there territory my urinating and rubbing on trees then when another wolf or pack knows to avoid or attack.Wolves can not bark so instead they howl. People think that wolves howl at the moon well it my look like they are but they aren't they are actually howling to the pack to let them know were they are if they got separated from the rest of the pack. When a wolf rolls on its back and whimpers to the lead female or male its showing its no threat to them and would like to join there pack. They can accept or deny it from the pack. If its a young male that wants to join the pack its might just want to take over the pack and become leader. Wolves are the largest of all dogs and people think that they are vicious animals they aren't mean animals they attack when they feel threatened or scared. There are over ten breeds of north American wolves the most Common is the gray wolf or timber. Wolves like most dogs shed and grow winter coats and shed it to grow there summer coat. They come in all colors from black, to white, to grey, to brown. Wolves can also cover several miles bye trotting at a pace of around 10 mph.

Seals, Sea lions, And Leopard Seals

Sea Lions unlike seals are large and are able to walk on land by using there long flippers and split tail to lift there large bodies off the ground.Seals have smaller flippers that don't help them walk on land, but help them swim in the icy waters of Antarctica. Sea lion's are close relatives to the leopard seal. The leopard seals have longer snouts to catch penguins and larger pray.They also have sharp teeth and the body of a seal that makes it unable for them to walk well on land. Sea lions have shorter snouts because they catch smaller pray like fish. Some species of Sea lions do eat small penguins such as the chinstrap and African penguins. Seals and Leopard seals live in icy, or cold places, and have blubber or fur to keep them warm in cold waters.
